ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELIZABETH SETON CHAPTERS OF THE
NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY
1. Only students in grade 7 or 8 are eligible.
2. Students must achieve a combination of ‘4’s’ and/or ‘5’s’ for two consecutive trimesters across the subject areas of Religion, ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. A student MAY achieve one ‘3’ per trimester and still be considered eligible for admittance. Eligibility periods occur after trimesters I and II of the seventh grade year, trimesters II and III of the seventh grade year, or trimesters I and II of the eighth grade year.
3. Students who have filled the academic requirement will be asked to fill out an application form. This form will be used to determine leadership qualities, honors or awards received, participation in volunteer community activities (such as the St. Rose Family Festival, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, alter server etc.) and co-curricular/extracurricular activities (chorus, band, etc). Application will be expected to demonstrate ten-fifteen hours of substantive community service. Filling out the application form DOES NOT guarantee acceptance. Additionally, TWO letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s character ore one letter which attest to the applicant’s leadership qualities and one attesting to character must be submitted. (Letters should be from someone with whom volunteer work was done or someone who can vouch for the applicant’s teamwork/leadership qualities) LETTERS AND SIGNATURES FROM RELATIVES ARE NOT PERMITTED.
4. Selections are based upon approval from a seven-member faculty committee.
5. Any student not selected, who fulfills eligibility requirements a second time, may be reconsidered at another membership time.
6. Once inducted, members must maintain the academic standards stated above. Failure to do so in a trimester marking period will result in a written warning being issued. If at the end of the next trimester the student again falls below academic standing he/she will be dismissed from the National junior Honor Society.
7. Membership also requires service. Each member is required to perform fifteen hours of approved service by the end of March. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the society.
8. Members are expected to exhibit exemplary conduct and deportment. Any student who receives an “N” in conduct or is summoned to a principal’s hearing may be subject to dismissal.
